A Radiologist practises individualised breast imaging based on mammographic breast density that is complemented with ultrasound and / or contrast-enhanced mammograms and MRIs. Real-time tissue biopsy is performed alongside sharing all imaging reports within 24 - 72 hours. Tissue biopsy results take 5 to 10 days to report including molecular testing.
30-minute consultations discuss individual breast cancer risks, family history and lifestyle risk factors such as HRT. Recommendations for testing inheritable of germline gene panels, and potential preventative population risk genes occur by referrals to leading geneticists.

How we work
Professor Winters, is a dedicated Breast Cancer Consultant, delivering ‘rapid’ One-Stop clinics in state-of-the-art facilities. One-Stop clinics provide a rapid method for making a diagnosis with imaging (mammogram, ultrasound +/- biopsy) at the same time and where results are 90% of the time given at the same consultation. The One-Stop involves an ‘in-depth’ consultation, imaging, diagnosis and treatment plan. (Imaging costs apply and will be informed on request).
One-Stop clinics provide a rapid method for diagnosing any breast problem or related concerns. The latest breast imaging is planned around individual breast tissue density, with access to 3-D tomosynthesis, expert led-ultrasound and contrast enhanced breast imaging (using (with contrast used to assess cellular function) based on the latest evidence. Equally, imaging techniques for staging breast cancers include PET CT scans.
All results are discussed by a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to ensure concordance of all reports, alongside expert recommendations. Specialists in pathology, radiology, oncology and radiotherapy ratify treatment recommendations. Our The breast team offer specialist referrals as follows:
- Physiotherapy
- Pain clinics
- Psychologists
- Lymphoedema nurses
- Breast Care Nurses
- Plastic Surgery
- Gynaecology
- Rheumatology
- Weight loss and Endocrinology
Individual breast cancer risks are assessed based on known risk factors: Previous breast biopsies; Family History, Age of first child, Duration of breast feeding, Body mass index, HRT, Endometriosis and Tubal ligation.
Preventative genetic screening is offered to all women in keeping with the latest clinical evidence.
The latest innovations based on the highest levels of clinical evidence are used.
Professor Winters advises Gene Expression Signature (GES) tests for different cancer types. These are used to inform future risks of recurrence at 10 years, and 20 years and may also predict complete cancer responses to upfront chemotherapy:
- OncoTypeDx
- Pam50 (Mammoprint)
- HER2DX (immune; proliferation; luminal type; HER2 genes) used to predict risks and pathological complete response
- Tumour Infiltrating Lymphocytes (TILS)
